Edo, Enugu, and Sokoto Rank as Nigeria’s Most Expensive States to Live in – February 2025 | #NwokeukwuMascot

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in partnership with Nairalytics, has released new data ranking Nigeria’s most expensive states to live in as of February 2025. The report highlights a surge in living costs nationwide, with Edo, Enugu, and Sokoto emerging as the hardest-hit states.

According to the findings, Edo State recorded the highest cost-of-living index at 33.6%, followed by Enugu (30.7%) and Sokoto (30.2%). Imo (30.1%) and Zamfara (29.3%) complete the top five, reflecting the growing economic burden across different regions.

Other states on the list include Abia (29.2%), Gombe (26.5%), Ogun (25.8%), Nasarawa (25.3%), and Ebonyi (25.1%), signaling widespread financial strain on households across the country.

The report attributes the rising expenses to a combination of economic pressures, including; Prices of staple foods have surged due to supply chain disruptions, rising fuel costs, and insecurity in agricultural regions.

Increased electricity tariffs, water bills, and transportation expenses continue to erode household incomes. Rental prices are skyrocketing, particularly in urban centers where demand outweighs supply.

With the cost of living hitting unprecedented levels, many Nigerians are struggling to afford basic necessities. Economic analysts warn that if inflation remains unchecked, more households will be pushed into severe financial hardship.

Experts have urged both federal and state governments to take decisive action, including: Stabilizing prices on essential goods, Expanding power supply to reduce household and business expenses, Introducing targeted subsidies and social welfare programs to cushion the impact on low-income earners.

As the economic strain deepens, many Nigerians are forced to make tough financial choices, adjusting their lifestyles to cope with the ever-increasing cost of living. Whether government intervention will provide much-needed relief remains to be seen.
