Abuja — The Julius Abure-led National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has raised serious allegations against Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, accusing him of engaging in anti-party activities and plotting to dismantle the party’s structure ahead of a planned defection to another political platform in preparation for the 2027 governorship election.
These accusations formed part of the resolutions adopted at the NEC meeting held on Monday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. In a strongly worded statement signed by the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, and National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the NEC condemned what it described as “unconstitutional actions” allegedly spearheaded by Governor Otti and the party’s former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
At the center of the controversy is a purported stakeholders’ meeting convened on September 4, 2024, in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, where a caretaker committee was established. The Abure-led NEC declared the meeting illegal, asserting that it violated the party’s constitutional provisions, particularly Article 14(4)(B), which vests the authority to convene such meetings solely in the National Secretary with the approval of the National Chairman.
“The NEC in session condemned in strong terms the activities of the Caretaker Committee illegally established by Alex Otti and Peter Obi,” the resolution read. “Governor Otti’s anti-party activities, including the unauthorized stakeholders’ meeting and the conduct of local government elections under the banner of another political party, are gross violations of party discipline.”
The NEC further alleged that Governor Otti has been working behind the scenes to create a factional leadership within the party and has scheduled what it termed an “illegal NEC meeting” to hold on Wednesday, in a bid to deepen divisions and ultimately cripple the LP.
The party leadership declared that it is fully aware of the governor’s plans to defect to another political party and emphasized that such moves will not be tolerated. “His anti-party activities are unbecoming of a highly respected public official and can no longer be acceptable. NEC stated that it will not hesitate to discipline him in line with Article 19 of the Party’s Constitution,” the statement added.
In reaffirming its legitimacy, the NEC also hailed the recent Supreme Court judgment which, according to the party, restored the “power, glory and supremacy” of political parties over their internal affairs. The council said the ruling validated the Nnewi National Convention held on March 27, 2024, which produced the current National Working Committee under Abure’s leadership.
“NEC in session believes very strongly that the present National Working Committee will lead the party in subsequent elections to victory and therefore reimposes their confidence in the NWC,” the communiquĆ© declared.
The NEC also issued a stern warning to all party members, stating that it would not hesitate to sanction any individual—regardless of status or influence—who violates the party’s constitution.
The meeting was attended by members of the National Working Committee, state chairmen and secretaries, party stakeholders, and other co-opted members as provided for by Article 13(A) of the party’s constitution.
With tensions rising within the Labour Party and speculations swirling about a possible political realignment by Governor Otti, all eyes are now on the coming weeks as the party seeks to assert its authority and maintain internal cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.
