Presidency Debunks Rumoured Sack of INEC Chairman, Labels Report as ‘Fake News’ | #NwokeukwuMascot

Abuja — The Presidency has swiftly dismissed viral reports suggesting that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has been removed from office, describing the claim as baseless and “fake news.”

O’tega Ogra, the Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Digital Media and New Media, issued a terse statement on Monday urging the public to disregard the rumour circulating on social media and some online platforms.

“Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman,” Ogra said. “Any such announcement will come from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation’s (SGF) office or any other official source.”

The clarification comes amid growing speculation over the leadership of Nigeria’s electoral body, which has come under increased public scrutiny since the 2023 general elections. However, the Presidency’s firm denial signals that there is currently no plan to unseat Prof. Yakubu from his position.

Observers note that the spread of unverified information regarding sensitive government institutions such as INEC could incite public tension and erode trust in Nigeria’s democratic processes. The Presidency has therefore called for responsible media engagement and cautioned citizens to verify information through official channels before dissemination.

As of the time of this report, neither the SGF’s office nor INEC has issued any statement on the matter, reinforcing the Presidency’s position that the rumour is without foundation.
