…Says over 5,000 plots already acquired in border communities | #NwokeukwuMascot

The traditional ruler of Okahia Autonomous Community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, His Royal Majesty Eze Okey Ananaba, has raised serious concerns over the growing security threats posed by the massive and suspicious acquisition of land by suspected herdsmen in the area.

Speaking during a town hall meeting and sensitization visit by officials of the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), the monarch warned that the trend could spark unrest if not urgently addressed. According to him, herdsmen have allegedly acquired over 5,000 plots of land in strategic border communities such as Mgboko Umuanunu—near the boundary with Akwa Ibom State—and Akpaa Mbato, located behind the National Institute for Nigerian Languages (NINLAN) in Ovom, Aba.

“We are worried about the large-scale acquisition of land by suspected herdsmen in several communities within Obingwa LGA. These areas could be used as operational bases for violent attacks. Nobody knows the real intention behind acquiring such expansive land in our rural communities,” Eze Ananaba warned.

The traditional ruler decried the destruction of farmlands and increasing reports of armed herdsmen wielding AK-47 rifles, saying these acts have heightened fear and tension in local communities. He added that farmers and vigilantes who attempt to resist the encroachment are routinely threatened with violence.

Eze Ananaba also revealed that the Council of Traditional Rulers in Obingwa has petitioned the Abia State Government on multiple occasions over the disturbing development, but lamented that no action has been taken.

“Traditional rulers are the government’s eyes in rural communities. We’ve reported this situation several times, yet nothing has been done. The government must urgently investigate these land transactions and halt further sales. We are witnessing what happened in Benue and Plateau States, and we don’t want such bloodshed here,” he pleaded.

Several participants at the town hall meeting also expressed worry, alleging that some traditional rulers may be complicit in the land sales to herders. They accused the State Ministry of Lands of approving large-scale land registrations without conducting background checks on the buyers or verifying land use intentions.

“It is not possible for up to 1,000 plots to be sold in any rural community without the knowledge of the traditional ruler. Some of them are clearly involved. The state government must stop approving massive land registrations without investigating the purpose. We want peace in Abia, not insecurity,” one community member stated.

The meeting ended with a collective call to Governor Alex Otti to urgently launch an investigation into the spate of land acquisitions in Obingwa and take preventive measures to avert a potential crisis.
