Owerrinta and Rice Production: A Clarification on Governor Otti’s Arise TV Comments by Obinna Oriaku | #NwokeukwuMascot
During a recent appearance on Arise TV, Governor Alex Otti, while responding to questions from Rufai Useni about agricultural development in Abia State, mentioned Owerrinta as a location where rice is cultivated. This comes as no surprise as Otti has no known plan for Agriculture or any sector apart from patching up roads.
I have been reflecting on what could have led the Governor to make such a glaring error, especially given how, in his time as opposition leader, he was quick to spot similar slips made by previous administrations. One would have expected something better from Otti, particularly in a subject as crucial as agriculture.
Owerrinta ,a village where I was born is located in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government area and bounded by Ngor- Okpuala and Ahiazu Mbaise in Imo State , is separated from Imo State by the Imo River, which acts as a natural boundary for both states. Contrary to the Governor’s claim, Owerrinta has no known association with rice farming, not even on a small scale. The area is predominantly known as industrial zone, there are cluster of companies in paper, toilet tissue production and for vegetable, cassava and yam cultivation including small scale business.
What heightened my concern is that this interview took place in Umuehim Nvosi, Governor Otti’s supposed village which is just 6 minutes drive to Owerrinta . It would be reasonable to expect that Gov Otti would be thoroughly prepared and well-informed in leading the discussion.
One thing is clear in that interview: Our Gov has no coherent program and plans for our Agriculture development. A situation where the Governor does not know the location that produces rice, which is a priority produce for Abia State is disturbing and disappointing to say the least. It is a worrying sign of Otti’s disconnect from on-ground realities.
Many have often said that Otti was never truly grounded in the affairs of the state prior to his election, benefitting largely from the national “Obi wave.” Unfortunately, his misstatements on where rice is grown in the state only affirmed this concern.
Our dear Govoo, for clarity, Owerrinta include all the villages that stretches from and around Umuikaa junction to the Imo bridge that serves as boundary between Imo and Abia. Many of our people are predominantly vegetable ,cassava farmers and Yam .
The area also extends toward the old Imo Airport site, which is reportedly being considered for a medical village project. While we were told of the proposed N1.3 billion medical city project is to commence this month, villagers say there is nothing happening on site, like clearing, engagement with landowners, or any visible pre-flag-off activity yet.
We hope these issues are addressed promptly. So far, it seems the audio promises of this administration are endless and the truth cannot be hidden forever.
