AUDIO: How Can a Governor Abandon a State House Over Rumours?” — Outrage Trails Otti’s Claims on New Government House | #NwokeukwuMascot

 News

Abia State Governor, Alex Chioma Otti, has stirred outrage following a shocking revelation that he avoided taking residence in the newly completed Government House in Umuahia due to rumours that live cows, tortoise, and vultures were buried within the premises for alleged fetish purposes.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, during a recent radio programme (People’s Parliament) aired on Family Love FM, the governor admitted that the strange rumours discouraged him from moving into the state-of-the-art facility built and commissioned by his predecessor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu PhD., just before leaving office on May 29, 2023.

During the radio programme, the presenter sought clarity on the governor’s position, asking, “Did you say something was buried in the new Government House?”

In response, the governor’s spokesman confirmed: “That’s the rumour we heard — that cows, vultures, and tortoises were buried in the new Government House.”

This revelation has triggered widespread condemnation from political observers, legal experts, and opposition figures, who accuse the governor of promoting superstition and abandoning constitutional responsibilities.

Earlier, in an interview with journalist Rufai Useni, Governor Otti had claimed that he could not move into the new Government House because the second floor was unplastered. However, credible findings and recent images of the complex have shown that not only were the upper floors plastered, but they were also painted exposing what critics now describe as deliberate misrepresentation and executive deception.

Reacting to the governor’s latest statement, a ward chairman of the Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barr Moses Henry Chigozie, lambasted Otti’s conduct as “an insult to governance and the intelligence of Abians.”

“How can a sitting governor abandon a government facility funded with public resources simply because of rumours? This is not only laughable but dangerously irresponsible,” Chigozie said. “A state governor is supposed to rise above street gossip, not rule a state from his bedroom on account of baseless fears. This only confirms what we’ve always known, that Alex Otti is not ready for governance.”

Another opposition figure, Mr. Ekele Gaius, described the governor’s excuse as “a classic case of voodoo governance,” warning that reducing state decisions to superstition is both undemocratic and shameful.

“If he’s afraid of cows, vultures, and tortoises allegedly buried in a building, then he has no business occupying such a high office. This is 2025, not the Stone Age. Governance is not guesswork,” he said.

Adding to the controversy, the Abia State Commissioner for Information had earlier announced plans to convert the new Government House into a five-star hotel, a move that legal minds and political stakeholders have condemned as illegal. According to the Abia State masterplan, the Government House zone was designated to house the three arms of government the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary alongside the Federal High Court and the headquarters of major security agencies.

Public affairs analyst, Barr. Nnaemeka Otuonye, questioned the rationale behind such a drastic proposal.

“You can’t convert a constitutionally designated seat of power into a hotel just because the governor is afraid of ghosts. This is not only a misuse of executive authority, but it is also an affront to the laws of Abia State,” Otuonye noted.

As the controversy deepens, calls have intensified for Governor Otti to either provide credible explanations or take immediate steps to relocate the seat of power to its rightful place, as stipulated by law and democratic principles.

For many Abians grappling with economic hardship, insecurity, and broken promises, the governor’s justification for avoiding the Government House appears not only trivial but insulting. The verdict from a growing segment of the public is clear: Governance must not be reduced to fear-mongering and personal sentiments.
