The leadership crisis rocking the Labour Party (LP) took a dramatic turn on Friday, May 2, 2025, as the party’s National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, fired back at Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, over what the party described as abusive and unbecoming comments made during a national television interview.

Speaking during a pre-recorded interview on Arise TV’s with Rufai Useni, Governor Otti, while addressing the leadership tussle in the party, dismissed the claims of legitimacy by the Abure-led faction, stating:

“I was in PDP, then from PDP I went to APGA, then from APGA I went to APC and then Labour Party which is the party that brought me to power. And today, we have fought and retrieved Labour Party. If you go through the Supreme Court judgment, you’ll see that Abure is just masturbating.”

The remark has since triggered outrage within the party’s hierarchy.

Responding at the Labour Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held Saturday at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, Abure described Otti’s comment as not only disrespectful but also ignorant. In a strongly worded statement, Abure said:

“Dwarfy men used to be men of great ideas, but Governor Otti, who is not just dwarfy in appearance but also dwarfy in knowledge, has become a liability to the Labour Party.”

The embattled LP chairman accused Governor Otti of misrepresenting the Supreme Court’s judgment, noting that the apex court clearly reaffirmed that the issue of party leadership remains an internal affair of political parties.

Briefing journalists after the NEC meeting, Abure lamented what he called the arrogance of the party’s only sitting governor, whom he claimed the party had helped to power. He stated that Governor Otti had continually embarrassed the Labour Party with divisive statements and misinformation.

The NEC, expressing deep concern over what it described as anti-party activities, announced the constitution of a disciplinary committee to investigate Governor Otti and other members involved in activities considered detrimental to the party’s unity and image. The committee has been given a two-week deadline to submit its findings for further action.

This development marks a new phase in the deepening rift within the Labour Party as tensions continue to rise between its national leadership and Governor Alex Otti.
