Use of Private Home Maintained with Public Funds Raises Fiscal Discipline Concerns — Amah Tells Gov Otti | #NwokeukwuMascot

In a strongly worded open letter addressed to the Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Elder Abraham Amah, has raised critical concerns over the continued use of the Governor’s private residence as the operational seat of government nearly a year into the current administration.

The letter, titled “Public Concerns on Government House Usage, Infrastructure Deployment and Fiscal Responsibility,” was prompted by recent remarks made by the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Mr. Caleb Ajagba, during an interview with prominent Arise TV journalist, Rufai Oseni. In the interview, Mr. Ajagba claimed that the newly constructed Government House initiated and almost completed by the previous administration was “not 100% complete,” hence its non-occupancy by the current government.

Elder Amah, however, described the explanation as insufficient and misleading, stating that if the Government House is indeed 95% complete, the administration should have prioritized its completion and immediate use. He argued that continuing to operate from the Governor’s private residence, which is reportedly being maintained with public funds running into billions of naira, raises serious questions about transparency, accountability, and responsible governance.

“The continued use of your private home, maintained and upgraded with public funds, sends a worrying signal about fiscal discipline,” Amah stated.

He further questioned the status of the Old Government House in Umuahia, which had served multiple administrations, asking why it has been abandoned despite being structurally functional. The PDP Chairman said the abandonment of existing public infrastructure, while diverting public funds to private property, places an undue burden on taxpayers and contradicts the principles of public interest.

Citing examples from Nigeria and around the world, Elder Amah challenged the administration’s claim that public infrastructure must be “100% complete” before deployment. He referenced the commissioning of the Second Niger Bridge despite incomplete link roads, as well as international examples like the phased use of the Big Dig in Boston and the Berlin Brandenburg Airport in Germany, all of which were partially operational before final completion.

“Your recent commissioning of the Uzuakoli–Abiriba–Ohafia Road, even though work is ongoing on a major section, proves that strategic deployment of incomplete infrastructure is both practical and necessary,” he added.

Elder Amah called on Governor Otti to demonstrate fiscal prudence and respect for public resources by immediately completing and occupying the new Government House. He also demanded a transparent breakdown of public funds spent on the Governor’s private residence and clarification on the status of the Old Government House.

In his closing remarks, the PDP Chairman reminded the Governor that history would not only judge what was achieved under his leadership, but also the methods and costs by which those achievements were realized.

“The people of Abia are watching. History will not only remember what was built but also how, where, and at what cost,” Amah cautioned.

The letter has since sparked debate across political circles in the state, with many calling for a detailed government response to the issues raised.
