…Says Otti’s Govt Turning State Security Against Democracy | #NwokeukwuMascot

Umuahia, Abia StateThe Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised alarm over what it described as a disturbing descent into political authoritarianism, following the deployment of a military task force, Operation Crush, to a peaceful PDP stakeholders meeting in Umuakatawom, Obingwa LGA, on Friday, June 13.

In a strongly worded statement signed by the State Chairman, Elder Abraham Amah, the party condemned the action as a “shameful and dangerous misuse of state security apparatus,” accusing the Labour Party-led administration of Governor Alex Otti of escalating efforts to criminalize opposition politics in the state.

According to the PDP, the meeting, which had the consent of local leaders and was scheduled outside school hours, was violently disrupted on the orders of the Obingwa LGA Chairman, Hon. Maxwell Chinweikpe Nwadike, who allegedly sought and obtained clearance from the Governor to mobilize Operation Crush, a joint security outfit originally established to combat crimes such as kidnapping and armed robbery.

“This was not a criminal gathering. It was a civil, lawful political meeting of a registered party. That such an event was met with militarized force speaks volumes about the desperation of this administration to silence dissent,” the statement read.

The party warned that the reclassification of opposition activities as security threats could set a dangerous precedent not only for Abia but for the broader democratic space in Nigeria. It accused the Otti administration of consistently weaponizing state institutions against the PDP since taking office.

The PDP chronicled a series of actions it considered targeted persecution, including:

  • The demolition and removal of PDP billboards under questionable signage regulations;
  • Disruption of PDP rallies through government-aligned agents and denial of access to venues;
  • Biased security deployment that leaves PDP gatherings vulnerable while shielding pro-government events;
  • Arbitrary arrests of party youth leaders based on trumped-up charges.

“This creeping authoritarianism must not go unchallenged,” the PDP declared, urging the Commissioner of Police in Abia, the DSS Director, civil society organizations, human rights groups, the media, and international observers to take immediate interest in the misuse of security agencies in the state.

The party demanded a full explanation for the militarization of a peaceful political gathering and called for accountability from all those involved, including the Governor and the Obingwa LGA Chairman.

Despite the intimidation, the PDP praised its members and leaders in Obingwa for maintaining calm and maturity. The meeting, though disrupted and relocated twice, was eventually held successfully, a testament to what the party called the “discipline and resilience of the Abia PDP.”

Elder Abraham Amah concluded by reaffirming the party’s commitment to democratic engagement and its resolve to reclaim power in 2027.

“No amount of intimidation, misuse of power, or weaponization of security agencies will deter the PDP from its mission to engage with the people of Abia and defend the tenets of democracy, PDP! Power to the People!” he stated.
