2027: Umeh Kalu Denies Endorsing Governor Otti for 2027 Re-election | #NwokeukwuMascot

ABUJA — Former Attorney General of Abia State and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Umeh Kalu, has firmly denied reports suggesting he endorsed Governor Alex Otti for re-election in 2027, describing such claims as misleading and misrepresentative of recent events.

In a statement issued from his Abuja law office, Kalu addressed a circulating news report which featured a photograph of him alongside retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Azubuko Udah, and former Aba North lawmaker, Rt. Hon. Alex Ikwechegh. The photo, according to Kalu, was taken during a courtesy visit on August 4, 2025, related to plans for a Pan-Old Bende civic reception in honour of Governor Otti.

“I confirm having agreed with my visitors that Dr. Alex Otti is worthy of a civic reception in his honour by the Old Bende Union, which I serve as Secretary General, in light of the remarkable achievements that have characterized his government so far,” Kalu noted. “However, there was absolutely no discussion on the 2027 election in Abia State or any mention of Dr. Otti’s second term bid.”

He described the report as a “twisted” version of the actual conversation and stressed that his appreciation of the current administration’s performance should not be misconstrued as a political endorsement. “My support for Dr. Alex Otti during the 2023 electioneering campaign is not in doubt,” Kalu said, “but that should not be mistaken for an endorsement of a yet-to-be-declared candidacy.”

The senior legal practitioner further emphasized his commitment to democratic ideals, making it clear that he neither represents the political future of the Old Bende region nor would he presume to speak for its sons and daughters regarding the 2027 governorship race.

“To suggest that I have foreclosed anyone from contesting the 2027 governorship election is not only false but portrays me as undemocratic and sycophantic, which I will never be,” he said.

Kalu also clarified that Governor Otti has not declared any intention to seek re-election, nor has he requested anyone’s endorsement to that effect.

In conclusion, while reiterating his support for the proposed civic reception, Kalu stated that the ultimate decision on Otti’s political future remains with God and the people of Abia. “Governor Otti’s political future and indeed his re-election in 2027 lie firmly in the hands of God and the Abia electorate,” he declared.

The statement appears to be a direct rebuttal aimed at setting the record straight amid increasing speculation about the 2027 political landscape in Abia State.
