VIDEO: Abia Airport Landowners Cry Foul Over Inclusion of Yoruba Names in Compensation List, Allege Fraud by Govt Agents | #NwokeukwuMascot

 News

The
lingering controversy surrounding compensation for the Abia Airport Project has taken a new twist as landowners from Umuezenta, Umuelenwa, and Okpuala villages in Umuomainta Mbawsi, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, have raised alarm over alleged fraudulent activities by government agents handling the project.

The concerned communities accused certain officials of manipulating the compensation process by inserting strange and non-existent names including Yoruba names into the list of supposed beneficiaries, thereby raising suspicions of corruption and identity fraud in the disbursement process.

Speaking after a joint community meeting, the landowners expressed outrage that the names they saw when they visited Umuahia to verify the compensation register included individuals who are neither indigenes of their villages nor have any ancestral claim to the affected lands.

“It is shocking that names we have never heard of, many of them Yoruba, appeared on the list meant for our people. This is a clear case of fraud, and we demand that the government urgently investigate how these names found their way into the document,” a community leader lamented.

The villagers also threatened to halt further work at the project site until the contractor provides a copy of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the land acquisition agreement signed with the host communities. They stressed that lands of such magnitude cannot be legitimately acquired without following due legal and traditional procedures.

They further faulted the government’s assessment process, alleging that the portion of land captured in the compensation list was grossly understated compared to the actual size of land acquired from them.

“The state government must come clean on this issue,” another resident declared. “We are not against development, but fairness and transparency must be the foundation of such a landmark project. Our people deserve justice.”

As the agitation intensifies, calls have been made for Governor Alex Otti’s administration to intervene, probe the alleged fraudulent insertion of names, and ensure that genuine landowners receive due compensation to forestall possible community unrest that could stall the progress of the airport project.
