Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect.

In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the former minister cited health reasons for his decision to step down. This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

“President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation,” the statement read.

“President Tinubu will likely inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week.”

Badaru Abubakar, 63, served as the Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.

His resignation comes amid President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, with further details on the scope of the measures expected in due course.
