Punch Report on Ikpeazu Faulted Over “Inaccuracies”, Media Adviser Demands Correction | #NwokeukwuMascot

A press statement issued on Sunday has faulted the PUNCH Newspaper over what it described as “inaccurate and misleading claims” contained in the paper’s December 7, 2025 Sunday edition regarding the political standing and public record of former Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu.

In the report in question, PUNCH alleged that Dr. Ikpeazu defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in April 2024. The statement, signed by his Media Adviser, Enyinnaya Appolos, firmly dismissed the claim as false, stressing that the former governor “remains a committed and active member of the PDP.”

According to Appolos, Dr. Ikpeazu not only maintains his membership of the party but also participated in the most recent stakeholders’ meeting held on November 18, 2025. He argued that a simple verification by the newspaper either through party officials or public records would have prevented the error.

The statement also challenged another major claim in the PUNCH publication, which referenced a supposed audit by “KPMG International Nigeria Limited” that allegedly indicted the former governor for diverting N1.9 trillion belonging to Abia State.

Appolos described the claim as “entirely fabricated,” clarifying that no such audit exists. Rather, the current Abia State administration commissioned a process review an exercise that, according to him, was neither a financial audit nor an investigative probe.

Citing details of the document titled “Final Report: Provision of Process Review Services to Abia State,” Appolos noted that the report submitted to the Governor on March 2, 2024 and signed by Saheed Olawuyi, Partner, Enterprise Risk Services at KPMG explicitly stated the limits of the assignment.

The extract quoted in the press statement reads: “This assignment was not performed by us in the capacity of a statutory auditor… We are therefore not required to render an opinion on the financial statements of ABSG.”

The firm also clarified that it did not conduct a trial or inquiry, sit as a tribunal, investigate wrongdoing, or determine guilt or innocence, a position that reinforces, according to Appolos, that the report was procedural rather than accusatory.

He further faulted the N1.9 trillion figure cited in the PUNCH publication, noting that Abia State under Dr. Ikpeazu neither generated nor expended such an amount. Available financial records verified through the SFTAS framework and the Federal Ministry of Finance, he said, confirm this.

Appolos stressed that since leaving office, Dr. Ikpeazu has not been indicted, charged, or prosecuted in any court of law on corruption or related matters. “This is a verifiable judicial fact,” he added.

While maintaining that PUNCH has a long-standing reputation for credible journalism, the statement urged the newspaper to issue a “clear correction or clarification” in order to uphold the principles of fairness and factual accuracy.

“Dr. Ikpeazu served Abia State diligently for eight uninterrupted years and left office without legal or administrative blemish,” Appolos said. “We respectfully request that future reports concerning him be verified through established communication channels.”

The Media Adviser emphasized that such corrections are essential to protect public trust and prevent reputational damage, especially as the former governor has been nominated for national service
