This was announced on X via the team’s verified handle, adding that Finidi George is saddled with the task of leading the team for their two forthcoming matches against Ghana and Mali.

Finidi’s appointment came barely three weeks after Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, who led the team to the final of the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, left the position.

Finidi was an assistant coach during the two-year reign of Peseiro.

On his debut in 1991, George, who also played for Calabar Rovers and Sharks FC in Nigeria before moving to Europe, scored one goal and assisted four others for legendary Rashidi Yekini.

He also helped the latter score Nigeria's first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against Bulgaria in Dallas, USA on June 19, 1994.
