The Board of Nigeria Football Federation has made a significant decision regarding the appointment of the new Head Coach for the Senior Men National Football Team, Super Eagles. The board has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint former ace winger Finidi George as the new Head Coach.

Finidi George, who previously served as an assistant to José Santos Peseiro for 20 months, took charge of the squad in an interim capacity during two friendly matches in Morocco last month. In the first match, his squad managed to secure a 2-1 victory against Ghana, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars. However, in the second game, they suffered a 0-2 defeat against Mali.

George, a prominent member of the 'Golden Generation' that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He also represented Nigeria in the FIFA World Cup finals of 1994 and 1998, where the team achieved notable success. George won 62 caps for Nigeria and accumulated gold, silver, and bronze medals from the 1992, 1994, 2000, and 2002 AFCON tournaments.

The 52-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis forward made his debut for Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Burkina Faso on July 27, 1991. He played a crucial role in assisting Rashidi Yekini in scoring Nigeria's first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against Bulgaria in 1994.

George's immediate task as the new Head Coach will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic. These matches are must-win encounters as the Super Eagles are currently lagging behind in third place in Group C of the African campaign, behind Rwanda and South Africa.

The appointment of Finidi George brings hope and excitement to Nigerian football fans, who are eager to witness a resurgence in the performance of the national team. With his wealth of experience and knowledge of the game, George is expected to lead the Super Eagles to success in the upcoming matches and beyond.
