The Abia State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has released guidelines for the upcoming Local Government elections, following the inauguration of the newly appointed Caretaker Committee, as announced by the party’s National Working Committee.

The party had previously declared its intention to participate in the Local Government elections scheduled for November 2, 2024.

In a press release signed by Jude Ndukwe, Media Adviser to the Abia PDP Caretaker Committee, and titled “Abia PDP Caretaker Committee Inaugurated, Decides on Forthcoming LGA Elections in the State,” the committee called on stakeholders to prepare for the primaries across Local Government Areas (LGAs) and wards in the state. The primaries, the statement noted, could be conducted either through direct primaries or by consensus.

The release reads: “The Caretaker Committee of the Abia State chapter of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, was inaugurated on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at the party's state secrtariat, in Umuahia. Thereafter, a meeting of the Caretaker Committee and the party's stakeholders was called and held on Friday, September 27, 2024, wherein the following decisions were reached:

“That the Abia State PDP will participate fully in the forthcoming LGA Chairmanship/Councillorship elections in the State. All PDP stakeholders at the Ward and LGA levels are to immediately put machinery in motion to conduct primaries for the election/selection of candidates for the purposes of the LGA elections through either of the following processes: a) Concensus / Harmonization b) Direct Primaries.

“Consequently, the new party cards will now be issued to members, while House of Assembly members of PDP will drive the processes where applicable.

“The cost of obtaining nomination forms for the forthcoming Abia State LGA elections is as follows, Chairmanhip: Female aspirants: N100,000 & Male aspirants: N200,000.

“Councillorship: Female aspirants: N12,500 & Male aspirants: N25,000. The forms can be obtained at the state party secretariat at Ogurube Layout, Umuahia.

“The closing date for submission of nomination forms to ABSIEC is Tuesday, October 1, 2024. While the party primaries take place the following day being October 2, 2024.

“It is important to note that Councillorship election will be held in INEC wards and not ABSIEC wards. It is the hope of the party that members would take advantage of this opportunity to participate fully in the LGA election processes and ensure victory for the PDP.

“The Party faithful present passed a vote of confidence on the Caretaker Committee and promised to work assiduously together to ensure victory for the PDP in the forthcoming LGA elections.

“The Party resolved that the processes leading to the emergence of candidates for the LGA elections must be transparent, and members must eschew divisions and go into the election as one united entity to attain victory for its candidates. PDP...power to the people!” Ndukwe concluded.
