Aba, the bustling commercial hub of Abia State, is witnessing growing discontent among residents as the newly rehabilitated Ehi Road, which connects Kent Road to School Road, has shown signs of failure only months after its grand commissioning by the administration of Governor Alex Otti. The road, which was touted as a major infrastructural achievement, is now marred by flooding, with the situation exacerbated by heavy rainfall.
The project, reportedly costing billions of Naira, ran into was inaugurated with much fanfare on May 24, 2024, by the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, who commended the government's efforts to restore Aba’s dilapidated infrastructure. However, just a few months later, the rehabilitated road has deteriorated, leaving residents frustrated and questioning the quality of work done.
A viral video circulating on social media shows extensive flooding on Ehi Road after a downpour, with angry residents expressing their dissatisfaction. Many have criticized the state government for the substandard work, urging it to take immediate action to prevent further damage to lives and properties in the area.
In the video, residents can be heard calling on the authorities to address the situation urgently. "We are disappointed that a road that was reconstructed just a few months ago has failed so quickly. This is unacceptable," said one resident. Others lamented that the project, which was meant to alleviate the infrastructural challenges in the area, has instead added to their woes.
The quick failure of the road has sparked widespread concerns over the government's commitment to ensuring quality infrastructure in the state. Many are demanding a thorough investigation into the project’s execution, as suspicions of inflated contracts and subpar construction materials grow among the public.
