The Labour Party (LP) in Abia State is reportedly set to witness mass defections across its 17 local government areas, as Governor Alex Otti’s anointed candidates for the November 2 local government elections have been directed to align with the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). The move has stirred up significant political discourse, as it validates earlier reports suggesting Governor Otti’s intent to influence the forthcoming polls by using ZLP as a platform for his preferred candidates.
Among the notable candidates rolling out their ZLP campaign posters is Chinedu Ekeke, a former Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, who is now vying for the chairmanship position in Isiukwuato LGA under the ZLP banner. Another widely shared campaign poster features Smart Iheoma, Otti’s ally, who was previously nominated as the Labour Party’s candidate for Umuahia North LGA before his name was removed from the list submitted to the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC).
This alignment with ZLP by Otti’s candidates is raising concerns about the Labour Party’s internal stability, particularly in the face of ongoing factional disputes and controversies surrounding the leadership structure. The Governor’s perceived efforts to consolidate power through a less scrutinized party are now drawing criticism from both party insiders and opposition members.
Meanwhile, the arrest of Ceekay Igara, the South East Vice Chairman of the Labour Party, has added further tension to the political landscape in Abia. According to a press release issued by the Acting State Chairman of the Labour Party, Hon. Emmanuel Nweze Oti, Igara’s arrest was initiated following a petition to the police alleging his involvement in extortion and impersonation. The release clarifies that Igara, who previously served as the State Chairman of the Labour Party, no longer holds the position after being elected as the South East National Vice Chairman earlier this year.
The petition accuses Igara of usurping the role of the State Chairman and carrying out activities that should have been handled by the legally recognized leadership of the state chapter, currently led by Mr. Emmanuel Oti and his executive members. The party insists that Igara’s actions were in direct violation of the party’s constitution and that his arrest was a lawful response to his refusal to honor police invitations.
“We are aware that following the petition, he had been invited by the police, to which he refused to honor. Every action we have taken, including our petition to the police against Igara, has been in line with the provisions of the law,” the press release states.
The press release also highlights the ongoing leadership dispute within the Labour Party, particularly the division between the faction led by Julius Abure, the court-recognized National Chairman of the Labour Party, and the faction loyal to Otti. While Abure’s faction had moved to dissolve the existing state leadership and impose a new Caretaker Committee in Abia, the state chapter led by Oti had secured a court order restraining them from taking such actions. Despite this, Abure and his allies, including Igara, allegedly continued to defy the legal provisions, prompting the petition that led to Igara’s arrest.
The state chapter of the Labour Party has condemned attempts to politicize the issue, accusing those blackmailing the Abia State Government over Igara’s arrest of either being unaware of the facts or acting out of selfish political motives.
As the November 2 local government elections approach, the mass defections to the Zenith Labour Party pose a significant threat to the Labour Party’s standing in Abia State. With Governor Otti’s influence in play and his anointed candidates now competing under the ZLP banner, the Labour Party is faced with an internal crisis that could see a major reshuffling of power at the local level.
The Labour Party in Abia must now navigate both its leadership disputes and the fallout from Otti’s political maneuvering if it hopes to remain a competitive force in the upcoming elections.
