Umuahia – Another industrial crisis is brewing in Abia State as the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Abia State Chapter, has issued a fresh 7-day ultimatum to the state government over its failure to implement Financial Autonomy, the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS), and Administrative Autonomy as mandated by law.

In a letter dated January 30, 2025, and addressed to Governor Alex Otti, PASAN reminded the government of an earlier 14-day ultimatum issued on November 19, 2024, which was ignored despite being in line with the constitutional provisions of Nigeria and Law No. 8 of 2019 of the Abia State House of Assembly. The association stated that after a review of its engagement with government officials, it was observed that “no single action was taken to avert the industrial crisis.”

The latest ultimatum, effective from January 31 to February 10, 2025, signals the imminent withdrawal of services by parliamentary staff if their demands remain unmet. PASAN’s leadership, represented by State Chairman Comrade Kalu O. Sunday and State Secretary Comrade Ucheka Ugochukwu, emphasized that the inaction of the Otti-led administration has left the union with no choice but to take drastic steps.

The looming strike poses a significant threat to legislative activities in the state, potentially crippling the operations of the Abia State House of Assembly. It further adds to growing concerns over Governor Otti’s handling of labor-related matters, with critics accusing his administration of negligence and insensitivity to workers’ welfare.

Observers have warned that if the government fails to act promptly, the consequences could be dire, not only for legislative processes but also for the credibility of the administration, which had promised to prioritize workers’ welfare. The opposition has also weighed in, cautioning Governor Otti against his usual tactic of deflecting responsibility and blaming the past administration for his own governance failures.

The ball is now in Governor Otti’s court, as PASAN and the people of Abia watch closely to see if his government will rise to the occasion or allow yet another sector to be engulfed in industrial turmoil.
