Ugwunagbo, Abia State – Tension is brewing in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area as the Ugwunagbo People’s Alliance (UPA), a socio-political group representing the interests of the people, has strongly condemned a planned town hall meeting allegedly organized by the LGA Chairman, Mr. Iheanacho Chiemela Wagbara, and sponsored by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, January 30, 2025, and signed by Chief Dr. Joe UmunnaMrs. Iheoma Nwangu, Esq., and Comrade Obi Jude—the President, Secretary, and Public Relations Officer (PRO) of UPA, respectively—the group described the meeting, scheduled for Friday, January 31, as an act of provocation and a blatant disregard for due process.

The group insists that the initiative was originally conceived through extensive consultations among Ugwunagbo youths and should not proceed without their direct involvement and approval.

The statement reads in full: “The attention of the good and law-abiding members and indigenous people of the Ugwunagbo People’s Alliance has been drawn to a purported and provocative radio announcement of a town hall meeting in Ugwunagbo LGA, slated to hold on Friday, January 31, 2025, allegedly organized by Mr. Iheanacho Chiemela Wagbara, the Executive Chairman of Ugwunagbo LGA, and sponsored by Dr. Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State.

“We hereby unanimously state categorically as follows: That the said town hall meeting is the brainchild of several negotiations and consultations among the youths of Ugwunagbo and cannot hold without the prior consultation of the people whose idea has been stolen.

“That the youths can singlehandedly organize and hold a town hall meeting with all stakeholders, including present political officeholders at the federal, state, and LGA levels; Ndi Eze; titled chiefs; village heads; town union leaders; market leaders; men and women groups; youths; religious bodies; student unions; and the general public—without the sponsorship of the state government.

“That if there should be a town hall meeting for Nde Ugwunagbo, it should be strictly for Nde Ugwunagbo alone, as it is a family meeting where strangers and visitors are not allowed. Bringing people from outside Ugwunagbo is not acceptable.

“That the state government has no business with the town hall meeting until resolutions are reached and agreed upon.

“That neglecting the illustrious and hardworking sons and daughters of Ugwunagbo is not just an insult, but akin to slapping a child in the presence of his parents and daring them to react. We cannot tolerate such humiliation and embarrassment.

“That the Chairman of Ugwunagbo, who is said to be the organizer of the purported town hall meeting, should, as a matter of urgency, apologize to Nde Ugwunagbo for going on air to disrespect us and cancel the said meeting until full consultations are made.

“We, therefore, urge all invited guests to abstain from attending the said event, as doing so doesn’t represent the collective interest of the good people of Ugwunagbo.

“We also urge the Executive Chairman to demonstrate magnanimity and leadership capacity by consulting widely before organizing such a people-oriented event.” The statement concluded.
