Abia PDP Chairman Backs Otti Against Defectors, Says Opportunists Deserve No Preferential Treatment | #NwokeukwuMascot

 Politics

In a surprising political twist, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, Elder Abraham Amah, has openly endorsed Governor Alex Otti’s scathing remarks against recent political defectors, declaring that such opportunists should not be rewarded with preferential treatment over long-time loyalists.

Elder Amah, in a letter dated April 29, 2025, praised the Governor for the bold statement attributed to him in the ABN TV publication titled “We’re Not Bothered By Opposition’s Noise.” The Governor’s comments, widely interpreted by some as a jab at opposition critics, were clarified by the PDP leader as a direct message to political defectors scrambling for relevance within the ruling Labour Party.

According to Amah, Otti’s blunt assertion that these defectors were not joining the party to contest any elections but merely seeking future survival, is both “commendable and instructive.” He further applauded Otti’s warning that such individuals should not expect to leapfrog those who have remained loyal since the beginning of his political journey.

“Your Excellency, I commend you for your forthrightness in reminding these newcomers that they should not expect preferential treatment over those who have remained steadfast,” Amah stated, in a move many have called an unusual show of bipartisan candor.

The PDP Chairman’s statement has stirred controversy, with critics questioning whether Amah’s letter signals internal dissent within opposition ranks or simply a strategic acknowledgment of political reality. Either way, his endorsement of the Governor’s anti-defection stance has added fuel to the ongoing debate about the value or lack thereof of political cross-carpeting in Nigeria’s democracy.

Political analysts have noted that such open criticism of defectors from both within and outside the ruling party is rare, and Elder Amah’s intervention could shift the narrative about political loyalty, especially in Abia State where defections are often treated as political currency.

With this unexpected alignment of views between opposition and government on the issue of political discipline, the Abia political terrain may be witnessing the dawn of a new, less tolerant era for political jobbers and fair-weather loyalists.
