PDP NEC Under Pressure as INEC Recognises Wike-Backed Secretary | #NwokeukwuMascot

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) is under renewed pressure following confirmation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the recognised National Secretary of the party.

This revelation was presented during the 99th NEC meeting held on Tuesday in Abuja, following a verification assignment by a three-member fact-finding panel constituted by the NEC on Monday. The panel was led by Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, with Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, and the PDP National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), as members.

Sources at the meeting, including a NEC member who spoke to www.nwokeukwumascot.com on condition of anonymity, disclosed that INEC’s recognition of Anyanwu is anchored on a subsisting Supreme Court judgment and procedural compliance under the Electoral Act and PDP Constitution.

“The committee’s findings revealed that INEC continues to recognise Anyanwu because he has not been officially removed,” the source stated. “INEC informed the delegation that it must be given at least 21 days’ notice and must witness the removal process for any such action to be valid.”

As a result, the NEC resolved to defer further action, including a petition from the South-East caucus seeking Anyanwu’s removal, to a rescheduled meeting now set for June 30. The aim, according to insiders, is to perfect the process in compliance with the party’s Constitution.

Tensions flared further during Tuesday’s meeting when Jones Onyereri, Anyanwu’s running mate in the last Imo State governorship election, raised a fresh motion challenging the legitimacy of South-East Zonal National Chairman, Chief Ali Odefa. Onyereri argued that Odefa had been suspended and removed by a court ruling, and urged the NEC to cease recognising him.

The situation reportedly turned rowdy until Onyereri was directed to submit a formal petition for consideration at the next NEC meeting.

In the committee report obtained exclusively by The PUNCH, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu disclosed details of a direct interaction with INEC. The commission, according to the report, insisted that no replacement could be effected until Anyanwu was removed in line with the party’s internal procedures.

Part of the report reads: “His Excellency Peter Mbah met with INEC contact and reported to the committee the position/status of the National Secretary as follows: That the Commission still recognises Sen. Anyanwu in consonance with the Supreme Court judgment. That no replacement can be made until he is removed in accordance with the Constitution of the party.

“That a 21-day notice must be given to INEC for any such meeting aimed at removing or replacing a party official. That the NEC must comply with the Electoral Act and the party’s Constitution when initiating such actions.”

The committee, therefore, recommended that due process be followed to address the concerns raised by the South-East caucus and to restore internal cohesion within the region.

“The NEC should acknowledge the request and recommendation of the South-East caucus and consider it at the next meeting,” the report concluded.

As the PDP grapples with lingering internal divisions, particularly between factions loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and those aligned with other power blocs, the outcome of the June 30 NEC meeting could prove decisive in shaping the party’s leadership direction heading into the 2027 general elections.
