LAGOS – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday commissioned the first phase of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and several other road infrastructure projects across Nigeria, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to local content, technology transfer, and empowering Nigerians through strategic investments in national infrastructure.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Lagos, President Tinubu issued a stern warning to real estate developers and contractors who flout building regulations, emphasizing that henceforth, the Federal Government would not compensate developers who fail to comply with legally approved setbacks and planning guidelines.
“Let me warn all developers: the Federal Government will enforce setbacks, not for anything else but for the interest of the nation,” President Tinubu declared. “Developers who fail to obtain proper approvals will not be compensated. We have gazetted and published the setbacks, and we will enforce them in every legal way possible.”
The President directed the Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, and other supervising ministers to ensure full compliance with laws mandating local content, training of Nigerians, and technology transfer in all ongoing federal projects.
Highlighting the achievements of Nigerian engineering firms, Tinubu applauded Hitech Construction Company Ltd. for its world-class execution of the project, noting the adoption of Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement for durability. “This demonstrates that Nigerian companies can deliver to global standards,” he said.
President Tinubu specifically commended Engineer Ronald Chagoury for his role in coastal protection, which he said saved Victoria Island and Ikoyi from disaster. “We averted a catastrophe greater than a tsunami,” he noted, while urging more private sector support for Nigeria’s infrastructural transformation.
Appealing to Nigerians for patience, Tinubu said signs of economic recovery are visible. “Hope is here. Our economy is recovering. The foreign exchange market is stabilizing, and food prices are beginning to decline,” he assured.
He expressed gratitude to the people of Lagos for their support and urged citizens across the country to take ownership of federal infrastructure and ensure their protection for future generations.
The commissioned segment of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway spans from Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko Village Area in the Lekki Peninsula, part of the broader 700km coastal corridor designed to connect Lagos to Cross River, traversing Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States.
