Concerns Mount Over Project Quality as Ezeukwu Bridge Reconstruction Shows Early Signs of Collapse | #NwokeukwuMascot

Barely two years into the administration of Governor Alex Otti, yet another road project executed under his leadership is reportedly showing signs of failure, raising serious concerns about the quality and sustainability of infrastructural developments carried out by the current Abia State Government.

The affected project is the Reconstruction of the Failed Ezeukwu Bridge and Some Portions of the Road in Alayi, Bende LGA, which was awarded by the Government of Abia State. According to the project signage still visible at the site, the contract was handled through direct labour by the Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA), which also served as the supervising agency.

Despite its strategic importance to commuters in the Bende axis, especially as it connects several rural communities, the bridge and adjoining road are reportedly deteriorating just months after completion. Local sources allege that cracks and signs of structural weakness have emerged, prompting fears that the project might not stand the test of time, especially under the weight of seasonal rains and regular vehicular usage.

This latest development adds to a growing list of abandoned, substandard, or quickly deteriorating infrastructure projects reportedly commissioned under the Labour Party-led administration. Recall we had last week reported the failing portions of Omoba road Aba that failed barely 2 years after hasty reconstruction,  bringing to question the decision to award critical infrastructure works to local agencies via direct labour, without engaging more experienced and accredited construction firms.

Observers have pointed out that while the Otti administration frequently touts its infrastructural strides, this unfolding scenario reflects a worrying pattern that of prioritizing political optics over technical expertise and long-term value.

“The people deserve roads and bridges that can last for decades, not projects that collapse in less than two years,” said a concerned resident of Bende, who decried what he called “wastage of public resources in the name of development.”

With the collapse of the Ezeukwu Bridge project looming, Abians are increasingly demanding transparency and accountability. Calls are now being made for an independent technical audit of ongoing and recently completed projects, especially those managed through direct labour or lesser-known development authorities.

For an administration that campaigned on promises of infrastructure renewal and prudent public spending, this incident is a major setback and one that may define public trust in the days ahead.
