The announcement was made on Wednesday at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja by the party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum. He was flanked by high-ranking party stakeholders including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other prominent figures.
Damagum described the decision to reinstate Anyanwu as a “difficult but critical” one for the National Working Committee (NWC). He noted that the party had carefully considered its options before arriving at the resolution, adding that Anyanwu’s return was in line with efforts to reposition the PDP ahead of future political contests.
“This was a critical decision. Senator Samuel Anyanwu is resuming as the National Secretary of our party. Like INEC rightly stated, they did not receive any formal notification from us regarding changes. Therefore, what we will have on June 30 is an expanded caucus meeting,” Damagum stated.
He also revealed that the planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting had been cancelled and would now be preceded by further consultations at the caucus level.
The reinstatement follows a crucial meeting between PDP leaders and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Tuesday, where matters relating to the party’s internal structure and official recognition were discussed.
Senator Anyanwu, a known political ally of former Rivers State Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had previously stepped aside to pursue the Imo State governorship election in 2023. His return to the PDP’s NWC signals a possible consolidation of factions within the party as it prepares for future electoral battles.
