Abia 2027: Old Bende Never Endorsed Otti – Young Professionals Disown Ikwechegh’s Claim | #NwokeukwuMascot

UMUAHIA — A coalition of young professionals from the Old Bende bloc in Abia State has firmly denied reports suggesting that Governor Alex Otti has been endorsed for a second term by stakeholders from the region.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday in Umuahia, the group, under the aegis of Old Bende Young Professionals, described the claim as baseless and lacking any legitimacy. They maintained that no meeting was convened by the people of Old Bende to deliberate on the 2027 governorship election, let alone endorse any candidate.

The group dismissed the alleged endorsement, which was reportedly led by Hon. Mascot Ikwechegh, Member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, declaring it “null and void” and devoid of any democratic substance.

In the statement signed by its President, Barr. Chima Charles Ogbonnaya, and Secretary, Chief Chidozie Okwara (Dike Ohafia), the group condemned the action, asserting that those involved in the purported endorsement exercise were political imposters who had no mandate from the Old Bende people to speak or act on their behalf.

“It is unfortunate that Hon. Ikwechegh, instead of focusing on his legislative duties to the people of Aba, has decided to meddle in political affairs that are beyond his jurisdiction and authority,” the statement read.

The group reiterated that the 2027 governorship seat should naturally rotate to Abia North, a key part of Old Bende, and emphasized that no consultations or meetings have taken place regarding whom the region will support.

“What happened in Hon. Ikwechegh’s sitting room was nothing short of a political farce. It was premature, presumptuous, and absurd. If it were a military setting, all those who took part in that circus show would have been court-martialed,” the group stated.

They further argued that it would be politically illogical and unjust for Old Bende to endorse a candidate outside its region when it boasts a rich pool of competent and qualified individuals capable of leading the state.

“We have many eminently qualified sons and daughters of Old Bende who can run for governor in 2027,” the group asserted. “These include Rt. Hon. Ben Kalu, the current Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives; Dr. Sampson Uche Ogah, former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development; Dr. Philips Nto, former Commissioner and Provost of the Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu; Chief Chikwe Udensi, Ete Igwe San; and Chief Chris Igwe, among others.”

The group also decried the involvement of traditional rulers in what it described as a political charade, warning royal fathers to refrain from being used as pawns in partisan politics.

“While we understand the economic hardship in the land, our traditional rulers must uphold the sanctity of their thrones and confine themselves to their cultural roles,” they cautioned.

In a direct message to Hon. Ikwechegh, the group advised him to desist from usurping the roles of Old Bende elders and instead focus on delivering quality representation to his Aba constituents.

“If Hon. Ikwechegh is genuinely interested in the affairs of Old Bende, he should consider contesting for the House of Representatives seat in Bende come 2027 and allow the Ngwa people to reclaim the Aba seat in the interest of fairness, equity, and political balance,” the group added.

Concluding their statement, the Old Bende Young Professionals condemned what they termed Ikwechegh’s “undemocratic and self-centered political acts,” describing them as a blatant affront to democratic principles and the political autonomy of the Old Bende region.
