ABIA: Former D.Gov Ude Okochukwu Set to Join Otti’s Faction of Labour Party, Promised Abia North Senatorial Ticket | #NwokeukwuMascot

 News

Umuahia, Nigeria – A former two-term Deputy Governor, Sir Ude Okochukwu, is reportedly on the verge of joining Governor Alex Otti’s faction of the Labour Party, with a promise of clinching the Abia North senatorial ticket in 2027.

Okochukwu, a former stalwart of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is said to have made the move after a failed attempt to seize control of the PDP structure in the zone. His efforts were reportedly rebuffed, especially by the youth who declined to follow his lead after he betrayed them in 2023..

In a controversial move, Okochukwu has constituted five-man coordinators in each Local Government Area of Abia North zone to lure unsuspecting PDP members to join his expedition. The coordinators include Obike Mascot Imo (Bende), Barr. Olughu U. Kalu, a runner-up in the PDP chairmanship contest for Ohafia, Obinna Ekekwe (Isuikwuato), with Fabian Nwankwo and John Okoro for Umunneochi and Arochukwu respectively, both of whom are already members of the Labour Party.

Sources also confirmed that Hon. Mandela Obasi, member representing Ohafia South in the Abia State House of Assembly, was approached by Okochukwu’s camp but declined to join.

Further investigations revealed that Okochukwu previously attempted to secure the 2027 governorship ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) but was turned down by the party’s cordinators in Abia State. The rejection forced him to recalibrate his political aspirations, setting sights on a possible senate run through Governor Otti’s platform.

Notably, Ude Okochukwu holds the distinction of being the only Deputy Governor in Abia State to have completed two terms with his principal, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu. However, their relationship deteriorated sharply during the buildup to the 2023 elections. A report by U.S.-based Nkporo-born philanthropist, Jackson Udeh, claimed that Okochukwu never informed Governor Ikpeazu of his intention to run for governor in 2023. The governor reportedly found out through a retired military general who had been contacted by Okochukwu, a move that led to a deep rift between the two.

Critics and political observers now question how the ambitious and tactically shrewd Okochukwu would operate under Governor Otti, who is known for his firm grip on political control and preference for solo leadership.

Interestingly, ahead of the 2022 Labour Party primaries, Otti was rumored to have offered the Abia North senatorial ticket to Okochukwu. However, the deal reportedly fell apart when Otti learned from party headquarters in Abuja that Okochukwu had lobbied to have him replaced as the LP gubernatorial candidate, a move that reportedly infuriated the now-sitting governor of Abia State.

When contacted for comment on the former Deputy Governor’s possible defection, the Chairman of the PDP in Abia State, Elder Amah Abraham, declined to speak on the matter. He, however, hinted that the party would soon unveil a list of new and well-tested political figures ready to swell its ranks ahead of the next election cycle.

With realignments intensifying in Abia’s political landscape, Governor Alex Otti is increasingly becoming desperate and is now wooing Abia politicians he hitherto condemned as “blood tonic” and feeding both politicians. He is also said to be lobbying individuals and groups to issue endorsements on his behalf to prop up his speedily declining political capital.
