Arochukwu Equity Forum Demands End to Abam’s 28-Year Domination in Arochukwu State Constituency, Calls for Equity and Power Rotation | #NwokeukwuMascot

The
Arochukwu Equity Forum (AEF), a coalition of concerned stakeholders drawn from Ututu, Ihechiowa, Isu, Arochukwu, and Abam communities in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, has called for an end to what it described as “Abam’s 28-year political monopoly” over the Arochukwu State Constituency seat in the Abia State House of Assembly.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Chief Nicholas U. Kalu, and Secretary, Lady Nnuona Okereke Izougu, and made available to journalists by the group public relations officer, Hon Anselem Udoka on Sunday, the Forum decried the long-standing imbalance and lack of equity in the political representation of the constituency, stressing that power rotation among the five clans remains the only path to fairness and peace.

According to the Forum, since the return of democracy in 1999, sons of Abam have continuously occupied the Arochukwu State Constituency seat for an unbroken period of 28 years, effectively sidelining other clans despite their equal stake in the local government area.

The statement outlined the representation history as follows: Hon. Sampson Orji (Skorji) – 1999 to 2003 (4 years), Hon. Agwu U. Agwu – 2003 to 2015 (12 years)

Hon. Lukeman Ukara – 2015 to 2019 (4 years), currently serving as Special Adviser to the Governor on Legislative Matters, Hon. Uchenna Okoro – 2023 to 2027 (current member).

“By this record,” the group noted, “Abam has held the Arochukwu State Constituency seat for 28 consecutive years, leaving Ihechiowa, Isu, Ututu, and Arochukwu communities without a single opportunity to represent their people in the Abia State House of Assembly since 1999.”

The Forum condemned what it described as the “commercialization of political representation”, alleging that certain individuals in the constituency have used financial influence to retain power within Abam. It particularly criticized attempts by a few wealthy individuals to manipulate the democratic process, asserting that political leadership should be based on merit, not money.

“The narrative that one individual, Mr. Emmanuel Ume (popularly known as Koos), should dictate the political direction of an entire constituency simply because of presumed wealth is both insulting and undemocratic,” the statement said.

The Forum further argued that if the Assembly seat were ever to be decided by wealth, many illustrious sons and daughters of Arochukwu LGA, including Sir Chikwe Udensi (Ugwuaro), Sir Obasi (Sobaz Ltd), Sir Ike Okoronkwo (Ugwuaro), Sir Emma Nwade (Ugwuaro), Sir Eze Linus Nto Mbah, Chief Monday Amah, Chief Dan Okeke (Mezie Abia), Chief Donatus Okorie, Chief Akubueze Okorie (Onwa na Isu), and Chief Chijioke Isiụlụ are more than capable of matching any so-called political financier in both capacity and integrity.

Calling for fairness and inclusivity, the Arochukwu Equity Forum (AEF) demanded that the next electoral cycle must reflect justice through the rotation of power to other clans, especially Ututu, Ihechiowa, Isu, and Arochukwu.

“We are one people with a shared heritage and destiny. True progress can only be achieved when every clan is given a sense of belonging in governance,” the statement added.

The Forum appealed to political leaders across party lines, traditional rulers, and democratic institutions to support the call for equitable representation, emphasizing that the restoration of fairness would strengthen unity and sustain peace in Arochukwu Local Government Area.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for inclusiveness, political justice, and leadership accountability within the constituency.
