Scores Feared Dead, Many Injured as Section of Alex Otti’s Ekeoha Shopping Complex Collapses in Aba(VIDEO) | #NwokeukwuMascot

Tragedy struck in
Aba, Abia State’s commercial hub, on Tuesday afternoon when a section of the popular Ekeoha Shopping Complex, currently undergoing reconstruction by the administration of Governor Alex Otti, collapsed leaving scores feared dead and many others injured.

Eyewitnesses described the horrifying scene as chaos erupted in the usually bustling complex. Traders, artisans, and construction workers reportedly scampered for safety when the structure gave way, trapping several people beneath the rubble.

The collapsed market, one of the major commercial redevelopment projects embarked upon by the Otti administration, was being handled by Rhino Homes and Properties, a construction company linked to Mr. Chinedu Onyeizu, the contractor.

Mr. Onyeizu, who contested for the Abia South Senatorial seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019 and again under the Labour Party in 2023, is described by sources as a serial election loser who was allegedly compensated with major government contracts by the Otti administration despite questions over his professional capacity.

It will be recalled that Onyeizu previously handled the AIIP project in Ukwa West, another initiative of the Otti administration, which reportedly gulped billions of taxpayers’ money but failed to deliver the expected results. Following that project’s controversy, he was again awarded the reconstruction of the Ekeoha Shopping Complex.

Reports indicate that Onyeizu and his company, Rhino Homes and Properties, ignored a valid court order restraining further construction on the site pending the resolution of disputes among stakeholders over the project’s terms and supervision. However, in a move that many now describe as “a reflection of the governor’s will,” Onyeizu allegedly proceeded with the construction despite public outcry and legal restrictions.

According to unconfirmed reports, many of those trapped were construction workers and traders(those selling foods and snacks to the builders) who were within the building at the time of the collapse. Rescue operations by local volunteers, security operatives, and miniature emergency response teams were ongoing as at press time.

Some residents who spoke with www.nwokeukwumascot.com alleged that the tragedy may have resulted from the use of substandard construction materials by the contractors handling the project. “We had been hearing complaints from some of the workers about the kind of materials being used. This collapse is not a surprise to many of us,” one eyewitness said.

Government sources have yet to confirm the cause of the incident. Officials from the Ministry of Works and the Abia State Emergency Management Agency (ABSEMA) were yet to be seen at the site assess the situation. As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued by the Abia State Government regarding the number of casualties or the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

Families and friends of those feared trapped were seen wailing at the scene, calling on the government to expedite rescue operations and provide clear information on the fate of their loved ones.

Authorities are expected to launch a full-scale investigation into the incident as residents demand accountability and safety assurance for ongoing public projects in the state.
