Former Abia Governor Ikpeazu Makes Tinubu’s New Ambassadorial List as Presidency Sends 32 Names to Senate | #NwokeukwuMascot

Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has been nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as one of Nigeria’s new non-career ambassadors, marking his entry into the country’s diplomatic corps pending Senate confirmation.

Dr. Ikpeazu, who served as Abia’s chief executive between 2015 and 2023, appears on the fresh list of 32 additional ambassadorial nominees transmitted to the Senate on Friday. His nomination stands out prominently within a lineup populated by former governors, political heavyweights, technocrats, and seasoned administrators from across the country.

President Tinubu’s latest submission forwarded in two separate letters to Senate President Godswill Akpabio requests the “expeditious” screening and confirmation of 15 career diplomats and 17 non-career nominees. The list comes just days after the first batch of three nominees was sent.

The president emphasised that the nominees are being positioned to reinforce Nigeria’s foreign policy engagements in key countries and multilateral missions around the world.

Dr. Ikpeazu is joined on the non-career list by notable national figures, including Former INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Former Enugu State governor Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Former Lagos Deputy Governor Otunba Femi Pedro, Former Aviation Minister Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, Political commentator Reno Omokri and Former First Ladies Erelu Angela Adebayo (Ekiti) and Fatima Florence Ajimobi (Oyo).

Also listed are Tasiu Musa Maigari, Yakubu N. Gambo, Prof. Nora Ladi Daduut, Senator Grace Bent, Lola Akande, Barrister Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, and Ambassador Paul Oga Adikwu.

Dr. Ikpeazu’s addition signals the federal government’s recognition of his administrative experience, public service background, and political stature qualities expected to shape his diplomatic responsibilities once posted.

The new ambassadorial team is expected to be deployed to countries with which Nigeria maintains strong strategic and economic ties, including China, India, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, South Africa, and Kenya. Others will be posted to Nigeria’s Permanent Missions in the UN, UNESCO and the African Union.

Specific postings for Dr. Ikpeazu and the other nominees will be announced only after Senate confirmation.

The Presidency had earlier forwarded the first batch of three names which included Ayodele Oke, Amin Mohammed Dalhatu, and Retired Colonel Lateef Kayode Are who are projected to be deployed to Nigeria’s missions in the United States, the United Kingdom, or France.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed that more names will be released in due course.

Across Abia State, political observers say Ikpeazu’s nomination is likely to stir robust conversations within the state’s political landscape, where he remains a well-known figure. His transition from state governance to potential diplomatic service is seen as a significant development for Abia’s representation at the federal level.

The nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
