LP CRISIS: NEC Sacks Nenadi Over Incalculable Damage, Mandates Abure to commence conduct of 2027 Primaries | #NwokeukwuMascot

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has dissolved the caretaker committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, a faction widely recognised by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti. The development may deepen internal party tensions and pose fresh political challenges for the Abia governor ahead of his re-election bid.
The NEC also reaffirmed its confidence in the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Barrister Julius Abure.
In a statement issued by the Secretary of the NEC Forum, Alhaji Abdulrahim Imam Chindo, the council comprising elected state chairmen and their secretaries said the resolutions were adopted at the end of a virtual NEC meeting held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
The NEC further called on the National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, to issue the necessary notices to INEC for the conduct of primaries for the 2027 general elections in line with the electoral timetable.
According to the statement: “The following resolutions were adopted: Arising from the Tribune publication of March 6, 2026, calling for both virtual and physical NEC meetings, this virtual meeting became imperative.
“The meeting was attended by state chairmen and secretaries validly elected on December 6, 2025, alongside other prominent members of the party.
“NEC in session reviewed the activities of the caretaker committee and concluded that it had caused incalculable damage to the party since its illegal inception.
“NEC consequently dissolved the Esther Nenadi Usman Caretaker Committee and reaffirmed its confidence in the National Working Committee led by Barrister Julius Abure, elected at the National Convention held on March 27, 2024, and reaffirmed at the NEC meeting of November 28, 2025, monitored by INEC.
“NEC mandated Barrister Julius Abure and Umar Farouk Ibrahim to pursue the appeal pending at the Court of Appeal to set aside the judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu on January 21, 2026.
“NEC further directed them to issue relevant notices to INEC for the conduct of primaries for the 2027 general elections in line with the INEC timetable, once the Federal High Court judgment is set aside.
“NEC nullified all notices previously issued to INEC by the Esther Nenadi Usman Caretaker Committee.”
Political observers say the dissolution of the Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha’s led caretaker committee which aligned with Governor Alex Otti could intensify the leadership crisis within the Labour Party, potentially complicating party cohesion and strategy in Abia State ahead of the next electoral cycle.
