Rising Insecurity: Thieves Steal Chief Magistrate’s Vehicle Outside Court Premises in Abia | #NwokeukwuMascot

The stolen vehicle, a black Toyota Corolla belonging to Chief Magistrate Mrs. Ngozi Pearl Lekwa of Court 2, Umuahia, was reportedly taken from where it was parked along Finbarrs Road, adjacent to the court complex.
Recounting the incident, Mrs. Lekwa disclosed that she arrived at work at about 9:00 a.m. and parked the vehicle outside the court premises before proceeding to her office to attend to official duties.
According to her, she had planned to briefly step out later in the day to attend to some personal errands. However, when she left her office shortly after noon, she was shocked to discover that the vehicle had vanished from where it had been parked.
The magistrate said a friend later informed her that she had seen the Toyota Corolla being driven away at high speed shortly after it left the court vicinity. Although the witness noticed a man behind the wheel, she did not see the magistrate inside the vehicle.
“My friend assumed the driver had been sent on an errand by me and therefore did not raise any alarm, even though she considered the speed at which the vehicle was being driven unusual. The car was heading towards the Bende Road axis,” Mrs. Lekwa explained.
In a troubling twist, the chief magistrate revealed that she still had the vehicle’s key in her possession when the theft occurred and had not authorized anyone to use the car.
She further disclosed that only a day before the incident, she had ordered steering locks for two of her vehicles as an added security measure. Unfortunately, while one of the locks had been delivered, the second one intended for the stolen Toyota Corolla had yet to arrive.
The stolen vehicle bears registration number AA 579 NBB, engine number 2565542, and chassis number JTDR22E1D0247899.
The incident has further heightened concerns among residents over the growing wave of insecurity, vehicle theft, and criminal activities in Umuahia, particularly in locations previously considered secure, including government and judicial facilities.
Mrs. Lekwa confirmed that the matter has been reported to the police for investigation and possible recovery of the vehicle.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the case had been officially reported and that investigations were ongoing.
She appealed to members of the public with useful information that could assist in recovering the stolen vehicle or identifying those responsible to come forward and cooperate with law enforcement authorities.
The brazen theft, carried out in broad daylight and within the vicinity of a court premises, has once again raised questions about the effectiveness of security measures in the state capital and the urgent need for stronger surveillance and crime-prevention mechanisms.
