The deepening crisis within the Labour Party (LP) has taken another dramatic twist as Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, fired back at the party’s embattled National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, over the announcement of his purported suspension from the party.
Reacting through a strongly worded statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, Governor Otti dismissed the suspension as “a joke taken too far” and described Abure as a “clown in desperate search of a crown.”
The statement, titled “Alleged Suspension of Governor Alex Otti: Abure Is a Clown in Desperate Search of a Crown,” accused the Abure-led faction of making a mockery of internal party processes. It read in part:
“The attention of His Excellency the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has been drawn to the news of his purported suspension alongside other eminent leaders of the Labour Party by the former National Chairman, Julius Abure.
“The statement by Abure and his gang of comedians is not only a joke taken too far, but an affront to democracy by a group of inconsequential irritants desperate to use Governor Otti’s name to advance their self-serving economic agenda.”
Governor Otti’s camp insisted that Abure has no legal authority to act as National Chairman, citing a Supreme Court judgment and the formation of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee as proof that Abure’s tenure had effectively ended.
“For the record, the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, has rightly and unambiguously stated that Julius Abure is no longer the National Chairman of the Labour Party. The judgment, which aligns with the party’s constitution, formed the basis for the appointment of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee and stripped Abure of any authority to parade himself as such.”
The statement further alleged that Abure rushed to the press with news of Otti’s suspension only hours after he was summoned by the caretaker committee to answer to allegations of gross misconduct, including financial misappropriation, impersonation, and anti-party activities.
“Just a few hours after being summoned by the Nenadi Usman-led Committee, Abure hurriedly announced the suspension of Governor Otti and other eminent members of the party. This is nothing but a desperate attempt to deflect attention from his own misconduct.”
Calling on Nigerians to disregard what it described as a “laughable statement,” the Governor’s camp urged law enforcement agencies to take action against Abure.
“We enjoin Nigerians to disregard Abure’s laughable statement and continue to see him and his co-conspirators as a group of clowns in desperate search of a crown they do not deserve.
Finally, we call on the Inspector General of Police to arrest Mr. Abure for impersonation, while INEC should immediately implement the Supreme Court judgment to preserve the integrity of the judiciary and protect our democracy.”
Recall we earlier reported how the leadership crisis within the Labour Party (LP) escalated on Friday, May 2, 2025, following a controversial statement made by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, during a pre-recorded interview with Rufai Useni on Arise TV. Addressing the ongoing leadership tussle in the party, Governor Otti traced his political journey through several parties before arriving at the LP, saying, “I was in PDP, then from PDP I went to APGA, then from APGA I went to APC and then Labour Party, which is the party that brought me to power. And today, we have fought and retrieved Labour Party.
“If you go through the Supreme Court judgment, you’ll see that Abure is just masturbating.”
His remark sparked immediate outrage within the party’s national leadership, who described it as crude and demeaning.
In a swift response delivered at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Saturday at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, LP National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, condemned Governor Otti’s statement, describing it as both disrespectful and intellectually shallow.
Abure fired back, saying, “Dwarfy men used to be men of great ideas, but Governor Otti, who is not just dwarfy in appearance but also dwarfy in knowledge, has become a liability to the Labour Party.”
This latest development signals a continued escalation in the internal wrangling that has plagued the Labour Party in recent months, leaving the party’s unity and credibility hanging in the balance.
