Ehi Road Collapses One Year After Commissioning, Residents Decry Shoddy Workmanship | #NwokeukwuMascot

 News

Barely a year after its commissioning, the much-celebrated Ehi Road in Aba, which links Kent Road to School Road, has once again fallen into disrepair, raising fresh concerns over the quality of road projects executed by the Alex Otti-led administration.

When the road was inaugurated on May 24, 2024, by the revered Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, the ceremony was marked with pomp and heavy publicity. The project, which reportedly cost billions of naira, was presented as part of the government’s promise to rebuild Aba’s crumbling infrastructure.

However, just months after its completion, cracks and signs of failure began to appear, sparking criticism over the quality of materials and execution. Now, one year later, recent footage has exposed the road’s alarming state, with large sections already caving in and flooding worsening the damage.

A disturbing clip obtained this week shows a commercial tricycle operator struggling to lift his vehicle after it was trapped in a submerged portion of the failed section. The incident underscores the daily hardship residents and road users endure as they navigate the once-promising road.

Frustrated locals especially commuters have taken to questioning how a project that gulped billions could deteriorate so quickly, accusing the government of negligence and demanding accountability from the contractors and supervising agencies.

With the rainy season deepening the damage, residents fear that Ehi Road may soon become impassable, unless urgent remedial work is carried out.
